Things I learned yesterday

  1. Rushed poetry is not always good poetry. Criticisms of yesterday's examples included "forced" and "cheesy." Needless to say, I was initially disappointed, but felt better once I realized that it was forced and that it lacked a certain amount of grit and agony. There was no agony. There was not enough genuine emotion. It was an honorable attempt which failed. But there's always revision.
  2. My stomach is not really interested in digesting anything anymore, except for my stomach lining. Not sure about the nutritional value of that, though.
  3. There are not enough people in the world (or maybe just on campus) who have any interest in early American lit. I wanted to put a panel together for SCMLA in Oct., but I might just have to fly solo.
  4. Dane Cook is funny. After listening to a CD with T, I ran out and bought it last night. It's the kind of humor I appreciate--not too dirty, not too clean, with a good delivery. Not too shabby.
  5. The movie Pride and Prejudice is one popular fucking film. In an attempt to make my spouse happy (I do this on occasion), I thought I would go pick it up for her. Plus she has been bugging me about it for the last week and a half. So I go to Wal-mart (closest to my house, and usually lower prices) but they don't have it in stock. "You might check back in a few days," they said. Fuck that shit. I was determined. And besides, I'd already missed the beginning of Lost, so I wasn't going to rush home to catch it halfway through. So I go to Circuit City (which I generally despise). Sold out there. What the Fuck, dude? Then it's off to Target, where there were four left. I will say this--I've read the book, I like the book. But you'd think there was a golden ticket to Charlie's Chocolate Factory in every dvd case the way everyone in my neck of the woods has snatched them up.
  6. Board games can be a fun way to pass the time during a Junto meeting.
  7. Getting a good night's sleep is not overrated. I crashed out about 9:30 or so and woke up at 7:00 this morning feeling a little better, though I think I'm still a few hours behind. My 11:00 class was cancelled, so I can actually stay at home and chill for a while today. Maybe I can get Main Street finished, but it seems unlikely.
Tonight it's AmLit, and after class I'm going to my buddy's house to watch Mavs/Spurs--this could be a huge game. I should be back home about midnight or so. Tomorrow, I need to pick up my check, pay some bills, and take a pre-Junto nap. And then I'll pretend to be academic for a while before I revert back to my true form as a drinking idiot.

Dude, PLEASE tell me you bought Dane Cook at Wal Mart so you can return it. I could have given you the cd out of my cd player or burned you a copy. DON'T EVER BUY CDs without consulting me first. I have like 2600 files/songs on my pc and many of them are comedians.

By the way, Dane Cook is funny. Better than Mencia anyway.

Oh, and if I am around in October I will try to contribute a paper to that Panel for SCMLA. I think I have something on Frank Norris. Will that work? If not I can whip something together over an earlier work.

I probably should have contacted you first, but I had been shopping incessantly for Pride and Prejudice and really needed something to make me feel a little more macho.
It was either that or a set of boxing gloves.

The deadline for SCMLA is like March 15. I'm not sure if that would work for you, would it?
